Director Of Agronomy

Overview

The Director of Agronomy position is a great opportunity for an individual with a strong agronomic background and great business acumen to showcase their skillset over an expansive facility. This is a combined role overseeing grounds maintenance and improvements for the 54 holes of golf, as well as maintenance of the outside clubhouse areas, tennis facility and other common areas. This position reports to the General Manager, and with some exciting projects and developments in the works, the Director of Agronomy will have an opportunity to have a substantial impact on the Wailea Golf product and its Team Members. The successful candidate will be well supported by the three Golf Course Superintendents at the Gold, Emerald and Blue Courses, and the GolfBC Corporate Director of Grounds Maintenance.

Experience Required

  • 10 years of experience in, and a solid understanding of, the golf course industry 
  • Relevant education in agronomy, or plant and soil science and Turfgrass Management 
  • Strong problem solving, decision making and organizational skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, verbal and written communication skills 
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and on evenings/weekends/holidays when necessary 
  • Willing to be hands-on with the Team as well as complete necessary admin tasks 
  • Strong computer and Microsoft Office skills; embraces new technology 
  • An innovator and problem-solver who spots issues early and solves them effectively by staying connected with the Teams and Guests 
  • Experience liaising with construction companies 
  • Experience with warm season turf types and brackish irrigation water 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Recruit, coach, lead, inspire, motivate and develop the Maintenance Team to optimum performance to create a culture of exceeding expectations 
  • Set and consistently reinforce high standards for an inclusive, high performing culture of leadership and teamwork; ensure that the team continuously improves Wailea’s product and service quality 
  • Stay current with industry trends to advance course conditions and improve efficiencies  
  • Oversee the property maintenance and aesthetic, conducive to a world-class resort 
  • Oversee course infrastructure including drainage, irrigation system, cart paths, etc.  
  • Provide key updates to senior leadership Team  
  • Develop and implement strategic plans and goals 
  • Prepare and manage the operating plan and capital plan 
  • Coordinate and oversee golf course improvement projects 
  • Promote and inspire the Team with our Core Values
