Overview

Description of Duties:

This is a management level position, located at the Monroe County Department of Parks, responsible for planning, directing and supervising municipal golf courses at Durand Eastman, Genesee Valley and Churchville Parks in accordance with established standards.  Duties include directing activities related to pro-shop services such as greens fees and tee reservations, permit and pass sales, merchandise procurement and sales, cart rentals, tournament scheduling, golf lessons, and clinics and practice ranges; restaurant management including product procurement management and sales; and financial management of golf service operations.  Duties also include customer and public relations and enforcing golf course policies and procedures.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Parks and Golf Courses or other higher-level staff member.  General supervision is exercised over golf pro staff and laborers.  Does related work as required. 

Experience Required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:


(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s
degree plus three (3) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation of a golf
course, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s
degree plus five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation of a golf course,
two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain a valid Level I – Food Handler in Charge certificate approved by the Monroe County Department of
Public Health during the probationary period.


This position is subject to a background check for criminal convictions. Convictions will be considered but will
not automatically disqualify the candidate. No criminal background check will occur until after a conditional
offer of employment has been made, unless required prior to a conditional offer because of the nature of the
position or otherwise required by law.

Candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug
test. Failure to meet the standards may result in disqualification.
If you are appointed, you will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Essential Responsibilities

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)

 

Develops procedures for clubhouse facility operations and best management practices;

 

Oversees business transactions and point of sale system, accounting, purchasing, inventory control, monitoring, and reporting;

 

Develops and maintains a variety of records and reports, including but not limited to, golf course usage, financial reports and inventories;

 

Works with golf pros to develop marketing strategies, advertisement and programs to promote golfer patronage and enhance the golfer experience; maintains public relations with the public, golf organizations, and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA);

 

Provides customer service by responding to and resolving golfer concerns and respond to inquiries in a timely manner;

 

Enforces golf course rules, policies and procedures and county parks policies;

 

Develops and monitors annual golf course budget and revenue expectations in conjunction with the Superintendent of Parks and Golf Courses;

 

Provides for golf shop service including, but not limited to, repair, cleaning, servicing and storage of golf equipment;

 

Sells merchandise related to the game of golf and provides for the rental of golf equipment and golf carts; 

 

Schedules golf play, leagues, and tournaments; promotes and manages a junior golf program;

 

Ensures alignment of approach and attitude of pro-sop and restaurant concessionaires to provide for best customer experience;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of golf course management; good knowledge of the golf industry including the pro shop, retail and restaurant management, and sports merchandising;  good knowledge of effective business services management relating to point of sale, inventory, procurement and control, cash management, retail and restaurant operations, employee management and customer service; good knowledge of golf rules and regulations; good knowledge of business administration procedures and practices as they relate to the management of a golf club house facility; working knowledge of bookkeeping practices and budgetary procedures; ability to plan, organize and conduct special events and tournaments; ability to effectively utilize computer applications; ability to fit a customer’s specifications to the proper equipment; ability to work extended and flexible hours during the operating season; supervisory ability; ability to communicate orally and in writing;  good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
