The Pro Shop offers a complete line of golf equipment and apparel, as well as professional lessons. The Club maintains a putting green, a chipping green, a practice sand bunker and a driving range where you can hone your skills and master your stroke. During the season, the Club hosts exclusively member tournaments, couple’s events, and a junior golf program. Position Description: Head Professional

The Head Professional (HP) generally operates independently with periodic meetings to collaborate on issues with the Roseburg Country Club (RCC) Executive Committee as well as interfacing with other Club department heads. Responsibilities include recruiting, hiring and supervision of the smaller front-line staff who serve the Club’s members and public guests in the golf shop. Plus, this position will provide a supporting coordination to enhance the leadership of Superintendent, the Golf Committee, etc.

Successful development of new and sustainable revenues in golf, in close coordination with the F&B department, will be key to the future of this position. Further, promotion, execution and organization of golf-related activities (internal and external), management of Golf Shop merchandise, clubfitting, player development and oversight of all other golf instruction will be the key areas of focus. Representing the Club in the Roseburg, OR community and county at all times (even when not on property) will also be important.  This position supervises approximately 6 to 12 regular and part-time staff, but is considered hands-on as well.

Experience Required

The successful candidate is expected to have, but not limited to, the following.

  • PGA Class A Member in good standing strongly preferred.
  • In addition, 2-3 years of experience as a PGA Head Golf Professional or higher is preferred.
  • Proven success and experience managing golf shop merchandising and a tournament operation required.
  • Experience working in close coordination with a robust Food & Beverage department.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills. High proficiency with Jonas POS a real plus.
  • Handicapping knowledge, especially with Golf Genius preferred.
  • Strong computer proficiency, with some experience in producing online communication, social media, etc.

Significant Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing all aspects of the golf operations and play on the golf course through seeking continuous improvement to include hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and developing of the Golf Operations team at RCC.
  • Retaining, improving and executing existing member golf events, while seeking new opportunities to attract outside group events through customized, guest-centric delivery.
  • Developing and executing new golf course initiatives and programs to grow member activation, member retention and new member acquisition. Oversight of all golf instruction/player development programming to create and deepen member engagement, attract new members and new member families.
  • Provide/assist with tournament planning and associated operations for members and for outside groups. Growth of member events and member engagement opportunities should be developed and well-executed.
  • Coordinate with RCC Board of Directors to recognize new members, providing them with an appropriate orientation; collaborate with the appropriate committee (per the Board of Directors) to help assimilate new members.
  • Plan for/oversee Golf Shop merchandise purchasing and sales to drive sales, turns of inventory while maintaining a cost of goods sold (COGS) of 75% or lower. Foster and develop beneficial relationships with all vendors.
  • Coordinate and communicate with the Board of Directors (or their designee) and report on sales, receivables, payables, etc. per requests and in forms/timeliness requested.
  • Elevating the presentation of the golf shop, cart staging, practice facility, etc. at the Roseburg Country Club to make it the pride of the RCC membership and community at large.
  • Positive and proactive supervisory, leadership, management and coaching skills.
  • Ability to support decisions of the Board of Directors, Golf Committee, and management and to always communicate to team members/colleagues from the “global good” perspective. Possess exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and comfortable speaking in front of people.
  • Be able to work weekends, holidays, mornings, and evenings as business demands. This position is a year-round position with potential of member play all year. From April 1 to September 30, this position will be demanding in terms of hours invested.
  • Be able to manage time wisely to allow for balance in both work and personal life.
  • Proven experience in member engagement/player development programming including success executing PGA Junior League Golf, women’s new golfer development and similar. Ability to create/adapt instruction concepts to enhance the social connection and playing ability will be necessary for success. Further experience using technology in instruction is preferred (including launch monitor, simulator, video, etc.)
  • Thorough knowledge of ordering/purchasing, inventory control, budget management and P&L accountability.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with interruption while remaining focused on the key objectives of the position.
  • Proficient in computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, internet, and club specific platforms including the RCC point-of-sale system (Jonas), Golf Genius, Rules of Golf and the OGA handicapping system.
  • Must be willing to grow and be challenged, lead in challenging oneself, in the Head Golf Professional role as RCC strives for continuous improvement. Remain knowledgeable of industry trends and technologies and apply them when it will increase efficiencies while maintaining or elevating the member experience.

Additional Duties:

  • In coordination with the Club’s leadership, lead in the fiscal planning/budget monitoring of the entire operation.
  • Work with other department heads in the successful, seamless and profitable operations of the Clubhouse, including the Golf Shop, Snack Bar, Bar and Banquet Operations.
  • Play a leadership role in the mentoring, coaching and training of staff employed by the Roseburg Country Club.
  • Act in the role of “Club Leader/Ambassador” for Roseburg Country Club. Create, foster and nurture good rapport with local media resources including TV, radio and print; posting of results in the local paper.
  • Periodically play with club members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Benefits

Compensation and Benefits

The club will provide a competitive compensation and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. This includes but not limited to:

  • Base salary range of $60,000-66,000 based on experience and qualifications of successful candidate.
  • 70% of lesson income for private (1:1) lessons and clubfitting; 90% of group/clinic instruction (3 or more to 1 ratio) for women, juniors, couples, men, etc. (Recently this has been in the $5,000-10,000 range.)
  • Golf Department Performance Incentive with up to $4,000-$9,000 additional compensation available based on objective measures to include:
    • Member satisfaction and staff satisfaction measured through surveys
    • Golf shop merchandise incentive based on net margin sales, COGS, and inventory levels. Specifically, this incentive will be allocated based on three metrics: an established end of month inventory level based on an open to buy guidelines, gross sales and net margin revenue from sales.
    • Overall golf operation profitability based on “net increase” in golf member totals vs “trailing average” (average number of golf members in last three years)
    • The Head professional and Club President will meet prior to the start of each year to establish the method of distribution of the incentive compensation.
  • Health insurance stipend of $500 per month will be available for the HP and family. This stipend could be added to the paycheck or could be deducted pre-tax for an HSA account.
  • Reimbursement for Oregon PGA Chapter Pro‐Am entry fees (or similar), up to 12 events per season (when playing with different members during each of these events, based on reasonable effort, member’s schedules, etc.)
  • Per RCC policies, vacation/PTO for the HP will be one (1) week for first year of work; two (2) weeks after 2nd year
  • RCC will reimburse HP for preapproved professional development/education and budget travel to the PNWPGA Section Merchandise Show
  • RCC will pay the HPs PGA dues when in “good standing.” HP will receive family golf and social privileges per RCC policies; Club will provide HP with work cell phone (or offset stipend) and one meal per shift worked
  • RCC anticipates providing up to $3,000-$5,000 toward moving/relocation expenses (upon submission of receipts to Club’s Executive Committee)
  • Note: Based on the candidate, including capacity to lead, financial acumen and experience, this position could become a blended role of General Manager/Head Professional.
